Without a doubt, the Ford Escort is one of those legends that has changed the automotive industry and the world of motorsport. Rally fans across the globe remember the icon sprinting through the rough and ragged stages of rallies of the world, whether it be from personal experience or watching from a laptop on YouTube. The original Escort ran strong throughout the 1970s and 80s, and then in the 90s, well I’d rather we not talk about it, honestly.
While it may not look it, what you see here is indeed the resurrection of the name Escort, as at the Shanghai Auto Show from last weekend, Ford unveiled this concept car as the 21st-century iteration of the legendary Escort sports saloon.
This concept car can likely be expected to become a production version, as production of the car is soon to begin, and will slot below the Focus in the Ford production chain. With this car, Ford hopes to strengthen it’s place in the booming car market that is China.
The car is powered by a 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, which isn’t necessarily something to shout about, but there could be some entertainment value in it’s very compact size. Also, considering the fact that the car slots below the Ford Focus and that the car does bear the name ‘Escort’ on it, there should be a certain degree of sportiness in the chassis. However, we’ll see what comes of this car, let’s just hope that it is not as bad as the Mk5 was.
